This account is based on my experience of the last 7 years using Web hosting companies.
Initially I chose to use 1&1 Web Hosting for all my websites and domain name services for reasons of price, professionalism and stability, a rare combination, as these qualities do not always come in one package.
I started off with the the home package due mainly to its £400 free software offer, which 1&1 still offers (with more software), simply because I had just learnt some HTML and liked the idea of using a sophisticated Website editing package such as that offered (Netobjects Fusion) which I still use in conjunction with Dreamweaver.
After I gained enough confidence and knowledge I secured a domain name and attached that domain name to my my 1&1 hosted website, I found this process straightforward due to the logically laid out Control Panel.
The things that impressed me most about 1&1 (apart from the prices and features) were their helplines,whenever I needed to telephone the Technical helpline (cheap at 8p/minute) I found :

My queries were
always answered to my satisfaction by technically
competent staff,who actually understood what I was saying.

I was never left on
hold for hours on end.

I found the prices to be amongst the most competitive, considering the features offered, that I decided that it must be due to economies of scale.
I found the billing to be clear and concise, you can see clearly what you are billed for and how long your contracts last.
If you need to, you can cancel a contract easily and in a straightforward manner, no hassles, delays, excuses or multiple follow up emails asking why. I've done this with 1&1 to cancel domain names that I no longer use, if you've ever done this with other companies you will know what its all about, there must be so much admin involved behind the scenes with registration etc that I'd rather leave it to someone I can trust.
You can upgrade to more suitable packages easily, if you need to, and can add/remove/redirect domain names simply, using the Control Panel.
The 1&1 site is easy to navigate and everything is well laid out, with most terms being clearly explained.
The only service I found fault with is the email service, the one usually combined with Web Hosting, this I find quite fiddly to use, requiring a lot of navigation to access, and can be blocked by some company firewalls. I feel this service could be easily improved to the ease of use levels of free email services such as AOL and Tiscali.
